What do you do when doubt creeps in?
In this message we continue our new series Am I the Only One? by tackling one of the hardest questions to admit out loud – doubt. Many of us have been told that if we really had faith, we wouldn’t struggle with questions. But Scripture shows us something different. From John the Baptist to Elijah to Sarah and even David, some of the strongest people of faith wrestled with doubt. And instead of rejecting them, God met them right in the middle of it.
In this message we’ll see how doubt is not the opposite of faith, but often the very place faith grows deeper. If you’ve ever wondered whether your doubts disqualify you, this message will remind you that they don’t – they might actually be where God wants to meet you.
If you missed the live service or want to reflect further, you can watch the full message above anytime after. We’ve also included discussion questions to dig deeper into the message and a handout with fill-ins to guide your reflection. You can find the handout by clicking the “Download” button above. Whether you watch this on your own or share it with your small group, we hope this message encourages you.
Discussion Questions
- Why do you think Christians often feel like having doubts is the same as being weak in their faith?
- When you think of John the Baptist asking “Are you the one?” from prison, what does that teach us about how doubt shows up even after strong moments of faith?
- Elijah saw fire fall from heaven and then ran into the wilderness in fear. How does his story challenge our assumptions about what strong faith looks like?
- Sarah laughed at God’s promise, yet Romans says Abraham “never wavered.” How do you make sense of that tension between doubt in the moment and faith in the bigger picture?
- David cried out in the Psalms like God had abandoned him, yet he was called a man after God’s heart. How does that shape the way we think about doubt and worship?
- Why is it important to recognize that some of the most faithful people in Scripture still struggled with doubt?
- What are some doubts people in church today keep hidden because they fear being judged or misunderstood?
- How do you think the church can become a safer place for people to be honest about their doubts?
- In what ways can doubt actually drive us deeper into God’s Word or presence rather than further away?
- How does Hebrews 11:1 help you see doubt and faith working together rather than against each other?
