am i the only one?

Have you ever sat in church and thought, “Am I the only one who struggles with this?” Maybe it’s prayer that feels silent, forgiving yourself for the past, or wondering if your faith is enough. It can feel like everyone else has it all together while you’re barely holding on.

In this message, we launch our new series Am I the Only One? and take an honest look at the struggles we often keep hidden. Scripture shows us that doubt, fear, weakness, and questions are not the exception to faith – they’re part of it. And the good news is that God meets us right in the middle of those struggles with His grace.

If you missed the live service or want to reflect further, you can watch the full message above anytime after. We’ve also included discussion questions to dig deeper into the message and a handout with fill-ins to guide your reflection. You can find the handout by clicking the “Download” button above. Whether you watch this on your own or share it with your small group, we hope this message encourages you.

Discussion Questions

  • Have you ever felt like you had to put on a face at church that didn’t match what you were really feeling inside? What does that do to your faith over time?
  • Why do you think it feels so risky to admit struggles out loud, even among other believers?
  • Which of the biblical examples from the message (David, Elijah, Jeremiah, Thomas) do you connect with the most, and why?
  • How does it change your view of faith to realize that doubt, fear, and weakness are woven into the stories of the heroes of Scripture?
  • What lies does the enemy try to whisper when you are struggling, and how do those lies affect your willingness to be honest?
  • Why is secrecy so powerful in keeping us stuck, and what happens when we finally bring something into the light?
  • Think about Psalm 42 where David speaks honestly to God and then preaches hope to his own soul. How might that be a model for your own prayers?
  • Where have you personally seen God meet you in weakness, not after you fixed yourself, but right in the middle of the struggle?
  • What does it look like for a church community to be a place of light instead of a place for masks?
  • What is one practical way you can step into honesty this week with God or with another believer about something you usually keep hidden?
